The Afterschool STEM Hub, an initiative of the Afterschool Alliance, is happy to share the spring 2025 edition of our Afterschool STEM Quarterly Research Review newsletter! This newsletter aims to provide you with summaries of recent research from the field of afterschool, summer, and out-of-school time (OST) science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, with recommendations for how the findings can be applied to practice and policy.

In this edition, we highlight two articles focused on the value of afterschool programs working with college students as mentors and role models in STEM. An intriguing commonality between these articles is that both of the afterschool programs focus on engaging young people in STEM activities that are grounded in real-world problem-solving. This appears to help sustain participants’ interest by offering a sense of the relevance of STEM fields. In fact, many afterschool programs are integrating this model of programming and you can learn more about these efforts by checking out the Collective for Youth Empowerment in STEM and Society. Every year in March we celebrate Youth Voice Week, so we are delighted to be showcasing research that demonstrates the inherent value in elevating youth voice throughout this edition.
