Washington, D.C. – According to a household survey commissioned by the Afterschool Alliance and released today, four out of five Delaware parents who desire afterschool programs for their children are unable to enroll them. This is often due to the programs being too expensive, unavailable, or inaccessible. The America After 3PM report reveals that 90% of Delaware parents with children in afterschool programs rate them as excellent or very good, and there is strong support among Delaware parents for public funding of these programs.

In Delaware, the study shows that the parents of 87,943 children want afterschool programs, but only 18,132 children are enrolled. Around 9 in 10 Delaware parents support public funding for afterschool opportunities. A significant majority of parents in the state believe these programs keep children safe, enhance their social skills and decision-making abilities, and help parents maintain their jobs and increase productivity at work.
